POSITIVELY Pining For Spring

by Mauverneen

This baby robin is ready for the world
I wish spring would get here already. I’m more than ready to trade my parka and boots for t-shirts and flip-flops.  Officially, it arrived March 20th but can’t seem to decide if it wants to stay. In typical Midwest fashion it tempts us with false starts of 50 degree days and then backslides into winter mode with threats of snow.

Just a little snow
The harbingers of spring have all arrived – the robins have been back for weeks - all fat and happy, Easter has come and gone, baseball season has started and I have been drooling daily over the seed catalogs that get delivered to my mailbox.

Play Ball!
Is it always this slow or am I over-anxious?

I took a walk in the woods the other day to look for some signs of spring and they were there – green patches in amongst the weeds, some tentative budding on the trees, a couple of shoots poking up from the ground here and there. I heard the birds chirping and watched the squirrels recklessly chasing each other through the tree branches.

I am anxious for the first blooms of spring; crocus, daffodils and tulips, magnolia trees and apple blossoms. I want to put in my garden and watch the progress as my seedlings sprout and begin to grow. I want to open the windows and be able to sit outside in the sun. I want to watch the hummingbirds at the feeder.

Hummingbird at the feeder
Checking the migration map for hummingbirds here in Illinois I see that they can arrive anytime in April. I think I’d better go get those feeders up for any early arrivals. You just never know. They might be as anxious as I am.

As always, words and photos are my own, and require permission to reprint. However, feel free to share the blog in it's entirety. In fact, I encourage it!

  1. Maureen,
I love your musings of spring delay. Makes me realize I've been taking our lovely Southern California spring weather for granted. Well let me send some spring your way.
